Description: Horrified by Burtynsky’s images in his book Anthropocene, I can’t help but think, “what have we done to the planet?” Troubled by the ongoing reality of climate change, I chose to respond not with despair, but with a hopeful image. Sculpted from a freshly cut block – hence deep cracks – the spherical shape, echoing the shape of our planet, bears signs of growth emerging from its craters. From an anthropogenically damaged core, new life pushes outward. Despite harm, despite extraction and disruption, regeneration remains possible.
